So village, have you been feeling exhausted lately even though you got a good night’s
sleep? To truly show up as your full self, we all need to explore and prioritize the various
forms of rest that extend beyond simply sleeping.


We often equate rest with sleep, but it is so much more than that. Rest, from a holistic
perspective, is about intentionally nourishing ourselves – recharging, soothing, and
restoring the entire being. It’s about consciously slowing down, taking a break, and
creating space for rejuvenation. Ultimately, rest is not a luxury: it’s a fundamental
necessity for well-being. This holistic perspective focusing on the importance of rest is
based on the work of Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith. So, let’s talk about the 7 Types of Rest!

  1. Physical Rest: While sleep is a crucial form of physical rest, our bodies need more than just sleep to recover and prevent burnout. Active recovery through gentle movement, like yoga or a slow walk, and taking regular breaks throughout the day, can significantly improve energy levels and reduce fatigue. Quality sleep can also be enhanced through techniques such as power naps, and prioritizing a relaxing bedtime routine.

2. Mental Rest: Despite a good night’s sleep, you might say, Missy…I am still
experiencing some mental fog/brain drain or cognitive sluggishness. Mental rest
acts as a reset button for the brain, enabling it to de-clutter and regain focus. To
disengage and recharge, set firm boundaries, such as disconnecting from work
emails after hours or consciously stepping away for scheduled breaks.
Prioritizing mental rest is a vital investment in cognitive function, emotional
well-being, and overall health.

3. Sensory Rest: The nervous system is often on overdrive in this age of constant
stimulation. Sensory rest gives the senses a break from notifications, bright
screen, and background noise. Creating moments of quiet and calm allows the
nervous system to de-stress and reset.

4. Creative Rest: When you are facing a creative rut, remember that creative rest is
not idleness, but a powerful way to rekindle your imagination by actively seeking
out beauty, inspiration, and wonder. Here are ways to do that:
● Connect with nature
● Immerse yourself in art
● Embrace other creative hobbies
●Seek inspiration from others
● Introduce newness

5. Emotional Rest: When you are constantly juggling your own emotions while also
managing the emotional baggage of others, especially when dealing with drama,
negativity, and “energy vampires” who drain you, it’s crucial to prioritize emotional
rest. This means creating a space where you can be yourself, release built-up
stress, and openly communicate your feelings with someone you trust. “Brain
dumping” or journaling can be powerful tools to process these emotions and
learn to set healthy boundaries with those who are draining your energy.
Essentially, you need time and mechanisms to protect your emotional well-being
when faced with challenging situations.

6. Social Rest: Social time is not always energizing. Balance your interactions with
people who nourish you, practice saying ‘no’ to overwhelming commitments, and
dedicate moments to solitude for rejuvenation.

7. Spiritual Rest: If you are feeling disconnected or unfulfilled, spiritual rest can
help you to reconnect with purpose and meaning, to focus on something bigger
than yourself. Some ways to accomplish this:
● Reflect on your values
● Practice mindfulness and meditation
● Engage in prayer (if you choose to)
● Volunteering and acts of kindness
● Spend time in nature
● Seek support from others

By recognizing and addressing these distinct types of rest, you gain a holistic
understanding of how to:
● Better care for yourself and your overall well-being
● Show up as your authentic and complete self in all aspects of your life
● Embrace practices that nurture and restore your mind, body and spirit.
