Disney/Pixar’s SOUL movie
Pixar Animation Studios’ “SOUL,” released by Walt Disney Pictures, tells the story of Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx), a middle-school band teacher in New York City who gets the chance of a lifetime to play in the band of jazz great Dorothea Williams (Angela Bassett).?
After being hired, Joe is so thrilled that he becomes distracted, talking on his cellphone while crossing a street, and falls into an open manhole. Joe suddenly finds himself to be a soul in the “Great Before,” where counselors — all named Jerry — prepare unborn souls for human life with the help of mentor souls. Mistaken for a mentor, Joe is assigned to train Soul 22 (Tina Fey), a cynical, precocious soul who never understood the allure of a human experience, so she always remained in the Great Before.
As Joe tries to show 22 what’s great about being human, he also answers some of life’s most important questions. “An absolutely beautiful film,” says NPR “FilmWeek” critic Amy Nicholson.
“Highly recommended — especially to adults,” says CNN critic Brian Lowry. “The year’s peak achievement in animation,” says ABC News film critic Peter Travers. “Deep, witty, and fast on its jazz-loving feet,” writes Kevin Hartley in Total Film. The 2020 movie won 116 film festival and critic awards, including two Academy Awards — one for Best Animated Feature Film and the other for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score).
