Maintaining Wellness in Challenging Times

Hey Village! We have been dealing with some very challenging times lately. So, how have you been doing? This is not a rhetorical question, but it is one that I hope inspires some reflection on how you are focusing your attention on your mental health and wellness. We all realize that life is not always a bowl of cherries, but knowing how to take care of yourself when things get tough, or when you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed, can be extremely beneficial.
It’s crucial to adopt a comprehensive, integrated approach to self-care, addressing all aspects of our well-being, during these demanding times.
Here are some key strategies:
Manage your relationship with the news and social media: While staying informed is important, constantly consuming negative news or engaging in heated online political discussions can take a toll on your mental health. Consider setting time limits for news consumption, being selective about the news you consume by seeking out reliable sources and limiting your exposure to social media feeds that are overly political or negative. If you find certain topics particularly distressing, take a break from those news sources.
Prioritize self-care: Ensure you are getting enough sleep (7-9 hours per night), maintaining a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, staying hydrated, and engaging in regular physical activity. Even short walks can boost your mood and improve your health. Practice relaxation techniques such as mindfulness meditation or deep breathing exercises.
Connect with others and build a supportive community: Sharing your feelings and experiences with trusted friends, family, or support groups can provide relief, support, and different perspectives. Strong social connections are key to maintaining mental and physical health. Look for opportunities to engage with local organizations or join groups that share your interests or hobbies.
Focus on what you can control and take action (if desired): While it’s natural to be concerned about national events, try to avoid fixating on aspects beyond your control. Instead, focus your energy on areas where you can make a difference, whether it’s through volunteering, participating in community events, or advocating for causes that are important to you. Finding ways to be proactive can help alleviate feelings of powerlessness.
Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself during challenging times and remember that it’s okay to experience a wide range of emotions. Acknowledge your feelings without judgment and be patient with yourself as you navigate through difficult situations
So beautiful people, let’s not forget our interconnectedness – we share more common ground than differences. Life’s path isn’t always smooth, and anxieties can weigh heavily. But together, prioritizing mental health and wellness is key for all of us.
Here’s to brighter days!
